Kili Marathon and IDW MARATHON: Building a Girls Dormitory and supporting Programs
for Women and girls in Tanzania
From the New York City Marathon to Kilimanjaro, Africa, we have been honored to have so many runners support and enthusiasm. This year, we have four women running to support vulnerable girls by providing safety in the form of the construction of a dormitory, as well as programs in nutrition, health and education. Donate to encourage these advocates on their Kilimanjaro half marathon and ensure girls in Tanzania have the opportunity to realize their full potential and change their lives!
Asante to all of our BeSomeone’s runners who have raised over $50K toward construction and programs that have enriched the lives of Tanzanian girls and women. Want to join us in Tanzania this fall 2022? Check out our volunteer page!
ABOUT THE KILiManjaro MARATHON:
The route passes through many small farms, villages, banana and coffee plantations and patches of forest, providing great excitement to the residents who give ample vocal support.
The atmosphere in the stadium is electric with local bands playing, entertainment, crowds of local enthusiasts to cheer the runners, and lots of food and drink for sale.
The race is completely backed up, and manned by local organizations. Crowd control and traffic control are provided for, as is medical assistance and communications.
Official timekeeping is arranged, as is an official prize giving and function attended by local dignitaries.
FULL MARATHON
From the stadium, the route is a fairly flat 10km returning on same road back past the stadium gate – the Full is 30 minutes behind the half, on the same route which is described below.
HALF MARATHON
Starts 0700, outside of the college gate, and turns north, towards the mountain. Uphill, about a 250 altitude gain in 8 km. At about 8 km, the route follows a dirt road for about 2 km, though some farms and schools, before the long downhill back to the stadium.
Note – there are water points and sponge points amply supplied along this route.
Huruma means compassion in Swahili
The Huruma Girls Fund is an initiative to support vulnerable girls by providing safety, nutrition, health and education. Join our efforts to ensure girls in Tanzania have the opportunity to realize their full potential and change their lives.
When girls are educated, they are empowered to make positive changes not just in themselves, but in their families and communities. Education reduces child marriage, and provides them with more opportunities to generate income, reach their full potential and have a better future.
Nashipay’s story
Watch Nashipay take her first steps!
What an unreal ending (or new beginning) to an already touching story. One of the greatest dreams came true this year when we were able to change the life of a girl that we love so much.
For all of you who have been following the story, Nashipay is our little girl who was born with clubfoot, a condition that made it almost impossible for her to walk. We dared to dream big and believed that she deserved a brighter future, so we went out and asked YOU to join us in our quest. She received her surgery and we are so happy to tell you that she is now WALKING!
